  Secrecy Conference
Yesterday:

http://www.secrecyconference.net/

secret networks of terror vs. secret networks against terror

-- The conference explores theoretically as well as visually the emergence of new phenomena of secrecy within transnational terrorist and counterterrorist networks. Since 9/11 and in the aftermath of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq worldwide clandestine operations have increasingly been undertaken by terrorist and counterterrorist networks. Conflicts are on the whole no longer fought in public, but rather in concealment. In the present ‘state of exception’, the ‘war on terrorism’ has been waged in a symbolic realm consisting of global ‘cobwebs’ of names, actions and locations. This conference addresses the question as to whether the increasing awareness of hitherto invisible contemporary terrorist and counterterrorist actions has produced a new ‘visualization’ of secrecy. --

  Sound of talking [collective experience]
At http://www.sokwanele.com/ -->

Tracey Chapman famously informed us in song
that ‘Talkin’ about a revolution sounds like whisper”.
Zimbabweans could add that ‘talking about a revolution looks
like an sms message’.

The first message I received from Harare read
‘mass arrests @ rally. 1 killed. lots beaten by police.
v v bad. r u ok where u r?’

It was the first of many sms messages
that day. The details of our collective experience filtered down slowly via texts, emails, and phone calls from concerned family and friends in the diaspora who have blissful access to extensive information.

The majority of people in Zimbabwe do not have
the luxury of an internet connection or a cell phone, and they rely on second or third hand information, constantly re-cycled and checked. On their way to work they walk past newspaper billboards broadcasting disinformation and blatant lies. If they are lucky enough to have a radio, the state controlled media brings more of the same to their ears.

  Seeing Zimbabwe like a cake

Kubatana - blogs

-- "So what am I hearing here in Harare?

In several conversations I’ve had with high density dwellers they have stated that there is a heavy police presence, not only in Highfields but many other areas as well. An illegal curfew has been put in place which sees bars closing as early as 6pm. People walking in groups of 4 or more are particularly at risk of harassment and intimidation. Pedestrians are randomly being accused of being the “ones that stoned the police” at the rally on Sunday.

Peter, a waiter in a cafe in Harare, told me that he didn’t know that the rally was taking place, nor did his team mates so they were turned away by police when they arrived at Zimbabwe Grounds, the heartland of the rally that was disrupted. Peter was indignant and said that the ban of public meetings was ridiculous and that both Zanu PF and the MDC should be free to meet as they please.

I’ve been seeing Zimbabwe like a cake lately." -- /znip/
